The semiprecious stone malachite, a member of the copper carbonate minerals, is quite common. It is characterized by a green striation that ranges from yellowish green to dark green in hue. Malachite white is a union of marble and malachite; under the microscope, scintillating copper carbonate crystals can be seen to be embedded in a translucent marble matrix. The result is a luminous, sparkling green-white with a ghost-like effect in the shadows. Of all the whites shown here, Malachite white is the coolest.
