The hills near Naples contain deposits of a rich, red ochre pigment of volcanic origin called Earth of Pozzuoli. It is chemically unique in containing anhydrous sulfates. When mixed with lime, the red earth allows the mass to set and harden, which made it a popular building material in ancient Pompeii. Pompeian red is made from Pozzuoli earth and an organic “fining agent” that enhances the brilliance of the red. The Pompeians “fined” their color with red lead.

"Their colors are just unbelievably beautiful, whether the sun is shining, or it's rainy weather, or night, with every play of light they look different again. Incredible."
