Colorful blacks are made by adding small amounts of a chromatic pigment to black. Well aware of its advantages, we chose ivory black as the pigment for our base paint, even though it has such a high tinting strength, deep color, and coarse texture that most pigments cannot assert themselves in mixtures. Magenta, however, an extraordinarily fine-grained pigment, settles in the voids, allowing a delicate red to glow out of the intermediate spaces. The opulence of the mixture of these two dramatically different pigments is noteworthy.
