The custom of wearing black clothing during mourning can be traced back to the belief that the souls of the deceased initially do not want to leave their relatives. The souls, however, cannot see black; those in mourning are not haunted by the souls as often, and are better able to adjust to life without them. Henri Rousseau pursued a similar goal with his dark backgrounds, which often feature a color like this one. It allows his figures to unfold their full meaning against the dark and unimposing background.

"Their colors are just unbelievably beautiful, whether the sun is shining, or it's rainy weather, or night, with every play of light they look different again. Incredible."
