This remarkable pigment was discovered at a time when many scientific advances arose by chance. In 1704 in Berlin, the color chemist Johann Jacob Diesbach was experimenting with liquids prepared according to a familiar recipe. Instead of producing the expected carmine red, the mixture yielded a deep blue unlike anything he had seen before. Struck by the unexpected result, Diesbach investigated the cause of the reaction. He discovered that the potash he had used contained traces of potassium ferrocyanide. When a solution of iron salts was added, the reaction produced the intense blue pigment that came to be known as Prussian blue.(1) Its exceptional depth and brilliance make Prussian blue particularly suited to glazes and glossy applications across a wide range of techniques. It can be understood as a non-black black — less absolute than a pure black. Rather than absorbing light completely, it holds light within its depths, allowing the eye to enter the surface, much like looking into the deep ocean.
