Indian yellow is fabulously deep and rich for a golden yellow. It was produced from cakes of dried cow urine in India until 1921. These cows were fed only mango tree leaves, leaving them with a metabolic disorder and very dark urine. Calling the pigment source “Cow’s wine” was an effort to make the story sound nicer. The smell was severe so the color was only used for small areas. In 1866, the cows were placed under protection, but the black market thrived until 1921. Our Indian yellow is as strong and as beautiful as the original, but strictly vegan and fragrant.
