Dark and noble, a color that conceals.

The reference this mahogany brown color is based on was part of Le Corbusier’s second Salubra wallpaper collection of 1959. The color was a standard at the time when the market was dominated by genuine umber pigments and not by the mixtures of synthetic iron oxide yellow and black pigments referred to as “umber” after the 1960s. Because achromatic dark colors are perceived long after we perceive light ones, dark shades such as this one can be used as camouflage colors to hide elements not meant to attract attention. Just as we see flowers and leaves in the garden long before we see the soil underneath, so it is with this supportive color.
