Red earth colors, which are primarily composed of rich, red iron oxides, belong to the most important pigments throughout history. The ready availability and the powerful color shades of red iron oxide led to its widespread use in the most beautiful paintings and magnificent architecture of all eras. From around 1910, iron filings, a waste product of the rapidly growing chemical industry, were increasingly used as a raw material. After 1950, the synthetic iron oxide pigments produced from these filings almost completely replaced the more luminous natural pigments. Eileen Gray used this color in E.1027. Artists such as Le Corbusier appreciated this burnt Siena so much that they did not switch to the less expensive, less luminous industrial pigments as long as they could find suppliers who still offered natural pigments. This deep color emphasizes the volume it is used on, but it does not deconstruct the space. There are no natural colors or materials that do not harmonize with Terre de Sienne brûlée.
