The color Carmine red “conveys both an impression of gravity and dignity and of grace and charm,” writes Goethe, calling it the “highest ranked color” in his theory. The dried bodies of female cochineal insects once supplied the pigment, but they were soon replaced by synthetic sources. Carmine red looks most beautiful in the shadows, which makes it unique among all the brilliant red colors. It turns a common wall into a treasured surface, and it projects a marvelous rose-colored reflection onto white walls in its proximity.

"Their colors are just unbelievably beautiful, whether the sun is shining, or it's rainy weather, or night, with every play of light they look different again. Incredible."
