The traditional red house paint from Sweden was made with rye flour and iron vitriol red. Ironically, brick was ubiquitous and commonplace, but the red paint was rare and a sign of great wealth. Cuprous wastes deposited in great quantities on the iron-rich mountains near the mines in Falun gave rise to the pigment. Copper mining began in Falun around 1,000 A.D., and the metal was so abundant that the site was named Great Copper Mountain. How fortunate that copper mining yielded large quantities of the pigment as well!
