Charring ivory cuttings over embers once produced a deep black pigment that was prized by artists. International trade in ivory was finally banned in 1990, but happily, the pigment can be obtained from bones as well. What is called ivory black today is bone black or bone char. The pigment provides us with a jet-black color in any binder, as well as wonderful grays and tinted blacks such as this one. This black’s color depth is unique; only Vantablack is deeper, but the latter pigment is a high-tech material, whereas ivory black is sustainable and natural.

"Their colors are just unbelievably beautiful, whether the sun is shining, or it's rainy weather, or night, with every play of light they look different again. Incredible."
